NUKU’ALOFA-January 4: 3.15pm (R2R MEDIA): Waste collection by the Waste Authority Limited team will continue, it has been confirmed.
This follows the announcement by WAL that fire which had affected the Tapuhia landfill site has been controlled.
A team from MEIDECC has also been working with other stakeholders in trying to get the fire under control, since it started on December 21.
“The fire is already under control but continued to be monitored closely by Police Fire Department with the assistance of WAL’s landfill staff who watch the landfill on an hourly basis and report to the Fire Department any fire surface or appear at the site,” Malakai Lomu Sika said.
“The officers from the Fire Department continue to make regular visits the site to assess and monitor the situation.
“The time to fully eliminate the fire is unknown at this stage.”
Mr Malakai said the fire operation at the Tapuhia landfill does not affect the Waste Authority waste collection program.
“The waste collection continues during the Christmas and New Year season,” he said.
“Members of the public are hereby reminded to put out their rubbish to be picked up as normal schedules. As for people who bring their own waste to the landfill, the landfill is fully in operation and not affected by fire operation.
“The WAL has commenced using the new landfill cell 2 while the fire monitoring team works at the landfill 1.”
The Police Fire Department has been in charge of the fire operation with a multi-agency team consisting of the Geology Unit of the Ministry of Lands and Survey, MEIDECC, Ministry of Health, His Majesty’s Armed Forces, Mele Tonga Water Supply Services and other private enterprises.
