Communication officers’ roles important for Government

NUKU’ALOFA – February 23: 2.08pm (R2R MEDIA): Twenty eight (28) Government communication and information officers were reminded of the importance of their roles in promoting Government issues, activities and programmes through effective Press Releases during a one-day Communication Training at the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) here in Nuku’alofa on February 22.

The Director of Information Andrew Toimoana, who addressed the training, said the programme was important in helping the officers learn how to write effective Press Releases for their respective departments and ministries.

“This training is important because we see the need for government officers tasked with doing communication, media and information work to improve their skills so that we are able to help promote government programmes, events and plans more effectively, reaching out to Tongans every where,” Mr Toimoana said.

Trainer Iliesa Tora helped the participants on understanding what communication is and their roles as communication/media/information officers, the basics of gathering, validating and sharing information and how to write effective press releases.

Mr Tora emphasised the importance of ensuring that information released reach the people.

“So our job is to make sure that the information that needs to be released gets through the media and out to the people as intended so that they are informed,” he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Hon Siaosi Sovaleni, who visited the training before the morning sessions ended, reminded the officers of the importance of their roles and why it is critical that they provide factual and accurate information.

“That is very important for Government,” he added.

Officers from the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFFF), Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Revenue and Customs, Ministry of Infrastructure and Tourism, Ministry of MEIDECC, Ministry of Finance and National Planning, Ministry of Labour and Commerce, Ministry of Lands and Survey, Ministry of Public Enterprise, Ombudsman’s Office, Prime Minister’s Office and Tonga Health attended the training.

The training was organised by the Department of Information and funded by the Tonga Ridge to Reef (R2R) project under the Department of Environment.

    Please take note that 2 participants from Ministry of Public Enterprises (MPE) but MPE didn’t mention in your passage above.

      1. Hahahaha …. you are most welcome!!!! thanks for the latest update … in case my boss read your PR and found out that two staffs from MPE didn’t turn up to the training aye … but lucky, pictures will be the evidence … hahahahaha
