NUKU’ALOFA-April 5: 9.40am (Environment): The draft Declaration put together by delegates at the current ‘Whales in a changing world’ conference here in Tonga has been adopted at the Tanoa Dateline International Hotel here in Nuku’alofa this morning.
Conference chairman and Tonga’s Acting Prime Minister Hon Siaosi Sovaleni announced the adoption after no one objected to the Declaration when the Day 2 proceedings opened here at the Tanoa Dateline International Hotel.
The draft was put together in the afternoon session yesterday, with Hon Sovaleni directing the inputs and drafting, with the assistance of the Director General of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), Mr Kosi Latu.
The drafting team worked through last night to finalise the Declaration before presenting it to the conference this morning.
Hon Sovaleni thanked the conference for the action taken, adding that the Declaration will be taken to the UN Oceans conference in June.
The European Union ambassador in the Pacific, Mr Andrew Jacobs, who attended the morning session, congratulated the conference, adding that it was good to see consolidation and support within the delegates and participants.
The Declaration will be signed off tomorrow here at the Tanoa Dateline International Hotel by Ministers and delegates.
