Tonga MET tracks likely cyclone

Nuku’alofa – January 16, 2020: 3.40pm (Enviro News): Tongans have been advised to prepare for a cyclone that is likely to be a Cat 2 when it hits the country and possibly a Cat 3.

The Director of the Tonga Meteorological Services or Tonga MET, Mr Ofa Fa’anunu has confirmed this in his public messages broadcast on Radio Tonga this afternoon.

He said everyone should prepare for the worst.

Tropical Depression 04F is currently moving close to Fiji. On its current path it will also affect Tonga.

“We have started asking everyone to start preparing. We are working on tracking the cyclone and determine its possible paths but definitely it will affect Tonga,” he said.

The Fiji Met office in Nadi, which currently has jurisdictions over the South Pacific, has yet to upgrade the depression to a cyclone.

Forecasts and warnings given by Fiji Met over the past 24 hours had advised the people of Fiji to prepare for a cyclone, which is likely to hit the Northern Island of Vanualevu tonight.
