Nuku’alofa – August 4, 2020: 11am (Enviro News): The Tonga Ocean Plan has made the rounds around the Kingdom over the past three months, with a resounding ‘all for it’ given by members of the public.
Following community consultations in Vava’u, Ha’apai, Niuafo’ou, Niuatoputapu and Tongatapu, the Plan is being given the approval it needs.
Teams have been taking the draft plan to the people of Tonga ever since the COVID-19 restrictions were allowed in late April.
Discussions are currently being completed around Tongatapu.
Discussions have also been held with members of the different sectors including tourism operators, fishing, shipping and community groups.
Members of the Tonga Ocean 7 working group who have been taking the draft plan around the country will brief the working committee on the progress at the end of the consultations.
Government ministries and departments who have been working together on the plan include the Ministry of Environment (MEIDECC), Tourism, Fisheries, Ports Authority plus Lands and Survey.
